Market capitalization

Modified on Mon, 10 Aug, 2020 at 4:33 PM

Market capitalization (market cap) is the market value at a point in time of the shares outstanding of a publicly traded company, being equal to the share price at that point of time times the number of shares outstanding.

Where do I find it?

Market capitalization is available in the Valuation section of the Market Data view under Company Data.

What do I need to know?

Some companies issue multiple classes of shares. Some shares classes may not be traded on any exchange but the market cap must include all classes of shares, listed or not.

Treasury shares (shares bought back by the issuing company) reduce the amount of outstanding shares on the open market, hence the market cap.

On most views, you can click a market cap figure to check the underlying calculation formula.
