Stock performance

Modified on Mon, 10 Aug, 2020 at 4:33 PM

The most basic calculation for stock performance is the percentage change of the stock price from a previous date to the current date. This calculation called simple return focuses only on the appreciation in the stock price over a period of time. There is also another performance calculation called Total Shareholder Return (TSR) that includes both capital gain and dividend payments over the holding period.

Where do I find it?

Stock performance is available:

  • for a company, in the Stock Perf section of the Market Data view under Company Data;
  • for a list of companies, in the Performance view under Comparable Analysis;
  • for full flexibility, go to Performance Calculator under Comparable Analysis.

What do I need to know?

Individual stock returns are often compared to the performance of a benchmark market index over the same period of time. This calculation called relative return is the difference between the return achieved by the stock and the return achieved by the benchmark index.

Stock returns are by default calculated in local currency, i.e. the currency of the primary listing of the stock. However, changing exchange rates influence the value of stock investments. To measure the currency exposure of your list of stocks, change the currency from local to the currency of your choice.
