A market index can be used on Infront Analytics in two different ways:
- either as a reference index to calculate stock analytics;
- or as a reference universe for its constituents in a view filter or a screen.
Market indices as a reference index
More than 100 market indices are available for stock analytics such as beta, rebased quotes or relative stock performance. By default, the reference index used in calculations is the main index of the stock’s country. To choose your own reference index, use the Rebased quotes charts, the Beta calculator or the Performance calculator.
Market indices as a reference universe
More than 50 market indices are available for universe selection in Multiples charts, Ratios charts, Leagues tables or Screener. If the required index is not available, you have the option to create it manually as a personal list.
Price index vs performance / total return index
Market indices can be calculated in two different ways:
- either as a price index, which only considers price movements of the securities that make up the index;
- or as a performance / total return index, which assumes that all cash distributions, such as dividends, are reinvested back into the index.
Looking at an index's total return displays a more accurate representation of the index's performance.
